Tofino & Pacific Rim Corridor

Long Beach (Pacific Rim National Park Reserve) A 16-kilometer stretch of wild Pacific coastline — reportedly the longest beach in Canada accessible by road. The beach shifts from hard sand to tide pools to driftwood fields depending on where you walk. Surfers at one end, beachcombers at the other, old-growth forest as a backdrop on both. Walk it at low tide for the widest expanse; walking it in a storm offers a different perspective. Access from multiple pullouts along Pacific Rim Highway. - **Distance**: Up to 16 km · **Difficulty**: Easy · **Time**: 1–4 hrs depending on length - **Safety**: Rip currents are present on exposed beaches, especially during large swells. Do not swim unattended; watch for posted warnings and stay out of the water if conditions are unfamiliar.

Wild Pacific Trail (Ucluelet) A 10-kilometer trail hugging the rocky headland of the Ucluth Peninsula — owned and managed in part by the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Ucluelet) First Nation. The trail is divided into sections: the Lighthouse Loop (2.6 km, easy, family-friendly) circles the Amphitrite Point Lighthouse with open ocean views; the Ancient Cedars section moves into old-growth forest. Whales are visible offshore in spring and fall. The trail offers accessible coastal walking without permit or crowds. - **Distance**: 2.6–10 km depending on section · **Difficulty**: Easy-Moderate · **Time**: 1–4 hrs

Meares Island Big Tree Trail A water-taxi crossing from Tofino to Meares Island leads to a trail through one of the largest remaining intact temperate rainforest stands in Canada. Ancient western red cedar and Sitka spruce, some estimated at over 1,000 years old. The Hanging Garden Tree — a massive cedar — is the landmark. The island is a Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Park: traveling here is entering active Indigenous stewardship territory. Come with awareness of that. Water taxi from Tofino's government dock; check with operators for current crossings. - **Distance**: 4 km loop · **Difficulty**: Easy-Moderate · **Time**: 2 hrs + water taxi

Schooner Cove Trail (Pacific Rim National Park Reserve) A 2-kilometer trail descending through old-growth spruce and cedar forest to a secluded cove on Long Beach's north end. The cove is often empty even when Long Beach is busy. Tide pools at low tide; surf break at high. A notable short trail in the park. - **Distance**: 2 km round trip · **Difficulty**: Easy-Moderate · **Time**: 45 min

Strathcona Provincial Park (Interior Alpine)

Paradise Meadows & Battleship Lake Loop The most accessible introduction to Strathcona's alpine interior, starting from the Mount Washington ski area road. A 6-kilometer loop through subalpine meadows, past Battleship Lake and Lady Falls. Wildflowers from July through August are exceptional. The meadows are quiet, wide, and striking — wide-open alpine views, a completely different landscape from the rainforest coast. - **Distance**: 6 km loop · **Difficulty**: Easy-Moderate · **Time**: 2–3 hrs

Elk River Trail A 10.6-kilometer round-trip hike along the Elk River through old-growth forest to a glacially-fed waterfall. One of the most beautiful valley hikes in the park — the forest is dense and enormous, the river audible throughout. The waterfall at the end drops into a turquoise pool. Strenuous but not technical. - **Distance**: 10.6 km round trip · **Elevation gain**: 480 m · **Difficulty**: Moderate-Strenuous · **Time**: 4–5 hrs

West Coast Trail (Advanced / Multi-Day) The most demanding and celebrated multi-day trail on Vancouver Island — 75 kilometers between Bamfield and Port Renfrew through the traditional territories of the Huu-ay-aht, Ditidaht, and Pacheedaht First Nations. The trail passes sea caves, sea stacks, suspension bridges, ladders, and some of the most remote coastline in Canada. It requires a permit ($255 CAD + reservation fee), a registered orientation session, and solid backcountry experience. Open May–September. Plan 6–8 days. It is the defining coastal wilderness walk in North America. - **Distance**: 75 km · **Difficulty**: Strenuous · **Time**: 6–8 days - **Permits**: pc.gc.ca/wct

Juan de Fuca Marine Trail (Day Hiking Sections) A 47-kilometer coastal trail south of the West Coast Trail, running from Botanical Beach near Port Renfrew to China Beach near Jordan River. **Note: The full trail sustained significant storm damage and was closed through summer 2025; check bcparks.ca for current status before planning.** Individual sections — particularly the Mystic Beach access from China Beach (2.6 km, easy) and Botanical Beach (accessible year-round) — remain accessible as spectacular day hikes. Botanical Beach hosts some of the most dramatic tide pools on the island. - **Day hike**: Mystic Beach 2.6 km round trip · China Beach trailhead · Easy - **Botanical Beach**: 2.5 km round trip · Port Renfrew · Easy
