Tofino's landscape is actively stewarded by the Nuu-chah-nulth Nations and by a network of conservation organizations working in the sound. Engaging with that work — even briefly — changes the nature of a visit.
Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks — Support and Engage The Tla-o-qui-aht manage Meares Island, Flores Island, and other territories as a network of Tribal Parks. The best way to support this work is to book Indigenous-guided experiences in the sound (guides from the Nation), visit the House of Himwitsa and buy from Tla-o-qui-aht artists, and respect the Tribal Park's protocols (no driftwood collection, no unguided access to sensitive sites). tourismtofino.com/indigenous
Clayoquot Biosphere Trust — Community Fund The science and stewardship body for Clayoquot Sound's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Accepts donations supporting conservation research, Indigenous stewardship partnerships, and youth environmental education in the sound. clayoquotbiosphere.org
Pacific Rim National Park Reserve — Volunteer Programs Parks Canada runs seasonal volunteer programs in Pacific Rim including beach cleanups along Long Beach and Florencia Bay, invasive species removal, and trail maintenance. Contact the park directly at 250-726-3500 or via pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/bc/pacificrim for current opportunities. Day volunteers are welcome during peak season.
Surfrider Foundation — Tofino Chapter Tofino's surf community is active in ocean health advocacy and beach cleanup events organized through the local Surfrider chapter. Cleanups are posted on social media throughout the year; check @surfrider_tofino. Participation is open, informal, and genuinely impactful — Long Beach accumulates significant debris from the open Pacific.
