Art & Galleries
Pioneertown (Mane Street) The whole town is an artifact. Walk the main "street" (Mane Street — the original movie set thoroughfare). Surreal and atmospheric even without the crowds.
High Desert Test Sites An ongoing art initiative founded in 2002 by Andrea Zittel. Site-specific works scattered across the high desert landscape. HDTS has seeded a generation of artists coming to the desert to make work. Various installations are accessible; check current locations.
Art Queen Joshua Tree town. Gallery and art supply. A hub of the local creative community. Rotating exhibitions.
Coyote Corner Joshua Tree town. The landmark local gift shop. Rocks, crystals, desert goods, maps, information. A genuine local institution rather than a tourist trap.
Twentynine Palms Art Gallery Rotating shows, often featuring work by local and regional desert artists. Run by the 29 Palms Art Gallery, a nonprofit since 1944.
Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum Ten acres of large-scale assemblage sculptures built from desert salvage by pioneering Black artist Noah Purifoy, who lived and worked here from 1989 until his death in 2004. Over 100 works made from what the desert discards — tires, washing machines, bicycles, road signs — transformed into commentary on race, politics, and the American landscape. Free, open daily sunrise to sunset, self-guided. A significant outdoor art installation.
Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians telling their own story on their own land — nearly 48,000 square feet of first-person cultural narrative in downtown Palm Springs, opened in 2023. The plaza centers Cahuilla voice: language, basket weaving, songs, water management, and the sacred hot springs that give the tribe its name. The Oasis Trail connects the plaza to the tribal hot springs and Indian Canyons. For travelers who want to understand whose land they're walking on.
Palm Springs Art Museum World-class collection with strong desert Southwest emphasis. Architecture, photography, and modern art all represented. The building itself is striking.
Architecture & Design (Palm Springs)
Palm Springs is one of the world's greatest concentrations of mid-century modern residential architecture. If you're spending a night there:
The Kaufmann Desert House 1946, Richard Neutra. Visible from the street.
Tramway Gas Station Albert Frey, 1965. Now the visitor center. A modernist gem.
Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway Palmer & Krisel, 1960. Tours available.
Music
Pappy & Harriet's (Live Music) The essential live music destination in this entire orbit. Check the music calendar — touring artists of serious caliber play here regularly. (See Pappy & Harriet's under Nourish for dining details.)
Desert Stars Festival Annual music festival in Pioneertown. Lineup varies; intimate setting.
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival April, Indio. If timing aligns, the world's most famous festival is an hour away. Worth noting if timing aligns.
