May marks the transition to summer conditions. Temperatures regularly exceed 95°F by midday in the high desert; the Colorado Desert section can exceed 105°F. Dawn hiking and late evening are the only windows for active outdoor time. But May also marks the beginning of the Milky Way core season — the galactic center rises reliably on new moon nights. The park empties significantly from spring peak.

Magic window: Milky Way Core Season (March – Oct)

The galactic core rises above the southern horizon from late March through October. Best May–August when it is highest in the sky. The eastern park provides the darkest foregrounds — Skull Rock, Cap Rock, and the Cottonwood Spring area. New moon window is essential. Summer nights are warm enough to observe comfortably; spring and fall require layers after dark.

Conditions

Weather: 94°F high / 56°F low. Summer heat building. Midday hiking not recommended. Dawn and dusk windows excellent.

Crowds: moderate

What's open

Limited or closed

Prioritize

Dawn hiking for the golden light and cool temperatures. Dark sky photography at Skull Rock, Cap Rock, and Pinto Basin. The Cholla Cactus Garden at sunrise backlight is one of the most photogenic things in the park.

Wellness

Earth Yoga opens early — 7am classes get you into practice before the heat builds. Indoor wellness at Two Bunch Palms in Desert Hot Springs.

Dining

Crowds thin in May — La Copine is easier to book. Local restaurants on full summer hours.

Where to stay

Any accommodation with reliable air conditioning. Hotel Wren and Skylight Joshua Tree have it. Camping only if you can be in your tent before 10am and after 8pm.

What to pack

Heat management is the trip. Serious sun protection, wide-brim hat, electrolytes, minimum 1 liter per hour hiking. Cold weather layers for dark sky sessions after midnight.
