July is when everything is fully alive. Long Beach draws its largest crowds. Humpback whales are at peak numbers in Clayoquot Sound. And in Johnstone Strait to the north, the orca season is building — the northern resident killer whales gather in the waters off Telegraph Cove to feed on salmon runs, in numbers and consistency unmatched anywhere on Earth. If orcas are the goal, plan north.

Magic window: Orca Season — Johnstone Strait (July – Sept, peak Aug)

The northern resident orcas of Johnstone Strait gather in the waters off Telegraph Cove and Alert Bay in numbers unlike anywhere else on Earth. July through September, pods of 10 to 80 animals feed on salmon runs in the strait. The viewing from Robson Bight — the world's only protected orca rubbing beach — is the most reliable wild orca experience in the world.
