Surf season peak. The coast going quiet. First storm light.
October is the opening of true storm season and the peak of big-wave surf. Cox Bay and Long Beach receive the year's largest swells with the most consistent form. The last humpbacks of the season feed in Clayoquot Sound before departing for warmer waters. Visitor numbers drop to a fraction of summer. The old-growth forest has a quality of autumn light that exists only in this season.
Magic window: Humpback Feeding Season (May – Oct)
Humpback whales arrive in Clayoquot Sound in May and feed through October on the upwelling that concentrates fish in the Sound. Sightings on guided tours from Tofino are near-certain in July and August. Gray whales also feed in the area year-round — a resident population of about 30 animals known as the Pacific Coast Feeding Group.
