Early summer. Warm, clear, and building.
June is the beginning of peak season on the west coast. Weather is warmest and most reliable. Long Beach has long beach days. Humpback whales are feeding in Clayoquot Sound. The surf is consistent at Cox Bay. Hot Springs Cove by boat through the Sound is fully operational. East of the mountains, Victoria and the Cowichan Valley are dry and warm — a different island entirely.
Magic window: Humpback Feeding Season (May – Oct)
Humpback whales arrive in Clayoquot Sound in May and feed through October on the upwelling that concentrates fish in the Sound. Sightings on guided tours from Tofino are near-certain in July and August. Gray whales also feed in the area year-round — a resident population of about 30 animals known as the Pacific Coast Feeding Group.
