September is the transition month that many consider the best value on the coast. Orca season continues in Johnstone Strait. The biggest consistent surf swells of the year begin arriving at Cox Bay. Crowds thin noticeably after Labour Day. Humpbacks are still in Clayoquot Sound. The old-growth light goes golden. The coast that was overwhelmed in August settles back into itself.

Magic window: Orca Season — Johnstone Strait (July – Sept, peak Aug)

The northern resident orcas of Johnstone Strait gather in the waters off Telegraph Cove and Alert Bay in numbers unlike anywhere else on Earth. July through September, pods of 10 to 80 animals feed on salmon runs in the strait. The viewing from Robson Bight — the world's only protected orca rubbing beach — is the most reliable wild orca experience in the world.
