Last of summer. Perseids on the ridge. The fog is at its thickest.

August is the fog season peak. The marine layer is reliable and thick, often not lifting until early afternoon. But August also brings the Perseid meteor shower around the 12th and 13th — go to the ridge above the fog for one of the year's best dark sky shows. Humpback whales are at peak visibility offshore.

Magic window: Perseid Meteor Shower (Peak Aug 12–13)

The summer marine layer is often thick on the coast on Perseid nights — go to the ridge above the fog for the full show. Pfeiffer Ridge or the Tin House area (end of Tanbark Trail) put you above the layer at 1,500–2,000 feet. The rate is 50–100 meteors per hour at peak, against Bortle 1–2 skies.

Conditions

Weather: 76°F high / 56°F low. Fog heavy most mornings. Perseid meteor shower peak Aug 12–13.
