Late spring magic before the summer fog.
May is the last reliably clear month before the summer marine layer arrives. The hills are still green, temperatures are perfect for hiking, and the light is long and warm. Summer crowds are building. The Milky Way core begins to rise on new moon nights. This is the window before the coast goes foggy.
Magic window: Milky Way Core Season (May – Sept)
The galactic core rises above the southern horizon from spring through early fall. Kirk Creek Campground — perched on the coastal bluff — is one of the most remarkable Milky Way viewing sites in California. Best in summer (Bortle 1–2 on the ridges above the marine layer). New moon window is non-negotiable.
