January is the heart of humpback whale season and north shore winter. The ocean off the south coast shows breach and blow from cliff overlooks daily at peak. Hanalei Bay is closed for most water activities as winter swells arrive. The island is quieter than summer, prices are lower, and the light on the Na Pali cliffs in winter is long and dramatic.

Magic window: Humpback Whale Season (Dec – Apr, peak Jan – Mar)

North Pacific humpback whales arrive in Hawaiian waters each winter to breed and give birth. Kauai's south shore overlooks and the Kilauea Lighthouse headland are premier shore-watching sites. The Na Pali Coast boat tour in late February or March offers on-water sightings alongside the cliffs. Peak is January through March, when calf counts are highest.

Conditions

Weather: 76°F high / 65°F low. Trade winds consistent. North shore surf heavy. South shore sunny and calm.
