November is transition into winter. The north shore swells begin arriving from the North Pacific, and Hanalei Bay starts its winter transformation. Humpback whales begin appearing in Hawaiian waters late in the month as the vanguard population arrives. The island is quiet and local-feeling. Rain is more frequent island-wide, but the trade winds keep conditions pleasant on the south and east shores.
Magic window: North Shore Winter Surf (Nov – Feb)
Hanalei Bay transforms in winter. North Pacific swells arrive from October onward, building to some of the largest rideable surf on the island by December. Expert surfers at Hanalei Bay and Pine Trees. The bay is closed to most water activities for beginners during peak swell. Worth witnessing even if you are not paddling out.
