Whales winding down. Spring arriving. The Kalalau window opening.
March is a transition month with significant options in both directions. Humpback whales are still present through early to mid-March before the population migrates north. North shore swells begin to moderate, opening the window for north shore boat departures later in the month. Spring conditions bring the Kalalau Trail into its optimal window.
Magic window: Humpback Whale Season (Dec – Apr, peak Jan – Mar)
North Pacific humpback whales arrive in Hawaiian waters each winter to breed and give birth. Kauai's south shore overlooks and the Kilauea Lighthouse headland are premier shore-watching sites. The Na Pali Coast boat tour in late February or March offers on-water sightings alongside the cliffs. Peak is January through March, when calf counts are highest.
