Esselen and Rumsen Ohlone Nations Big Sur is the ancestral homeland of the Esselen people, who have lived on this coast for over 3,000 years. The Esselen Tribe of Monterey County is actively working to reacquire ancestral territory. The Ohlone Rumsen people managed the Carmel Valley and Monterey Bay area. Esalen Institute takes its name directly from the Esselen people who inhabited the land.

Point Lobos Foundation The nonprofit partner to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. Supports conservation, volunteer docent programs, and educational initiatives. Volunteer naturalist days are available to the public.
