Kauaʻi's Hindu Monastery — Kauai Aadheenam (Kapaʻa) A 382-acre monastery and temple complex on the banks of the Wailua River — one of the most unexpected and quietly profound places in all of Hawaiʻi. Founded in 1970 by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami in the Tamil Saivite tradition, it is home to roughly two dozen monks living under strict vows of worship, meditation, and service. The Kadavul Temple (1973) is the spiritual nucleus — a traditional Sri Lankan-style Śiva temple where the monks perform puja every three hours, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Inside the inner sanctum: 108 golden statues of Nataraja and a 700-pound naturally formed crystal Śivaliṅgam among the largest known in the world. The under-construction Iraivan Temple — being hand-carved from white granite by artisans in India for eventual installation here — is the first all-stone Hindu temple in the Western Hemisphere, designed to last a thousand years.
Visitors are welcome on the monastery grounds daily from 9 AM to noon. The 9 AM Śiva puja is open to all; reservation required through himalayanacademy.com. Dress modestly — no shorts, tank tops, or tight yoga pants; sarongs available at the entrance. No photography inside Kadavul Temple. The Rudraksha Grove (7345 Kuamo'o Road) is open separately from 7:30 AM–4:00 PM with no reservation required. Lydgate Farms — Chocolate Farm Tour (Kapaʻa East Side) A fifth-generation Kauaʻi family has been farming this land since 1865. Today, that legacy lives in a three-hour guided tour through botanical gardens and award-winning cacao fields — Lydgate has been recognized three times by Cocoa of Excellence in Paris (including Gold in 2023) as growing some of the finest cacao beans in the world. The tour covers the full arc from tree to bar: tropical fruit tasting (apple banana, lilikoi, rambutan, lychee, sugarcane, and more depending on season), vanilla beans on the vine, palm-blossom honey, and an education in fermentation, drying, and chocolate-making before an extensive tasting of their single-origin craft chocolate. It is genuinely one of the finest agricultural experiences in the state — not a tourist attraction that happens to have cacao, but a working farm with deep roots and real craft. Land & Water
Helicopter Flight — Waimea Canyon & Interior Kauaʻi's interior — the Mt. Waiʻaleʻale crater and the rivers that flow from it — is almost completely inaccessible on foot. A helicopter flight is the only way to see the inner waterfalls. Blue Hawaiian Helicopters flies doors-off tours; Jack Harter Helicopters pioneered the doors-off experience on Kauaʻi. Expensive. The only way to see the interior waterfalls. Be aware that helicopter noise is a contested issue on Kauaʻi, with ongoing community concerns about impacts on residents and wildlife.
Art & Culture
Hanapepe — Art Town A small former plantation town on the south shore that has become a genuine artist community. Friday Art Night (every Friday evening) opens galleries along the main street. The Hanapepe Swinging Bridge, built in 1911, spans the river behind the town. Worth an afternoon on the way to or from Waimea Canyon.
McBryde Garden (National Tropical Botanical Garden) The south shore companion to Limahuli — a major botanical collection with the largest assembly of native Hawaiian plants in the world, plus tropical collections from across the Pacific. Guided tours available and strongly recommended. ntbg.org
Music & Performance
McMaster Slack Key Guitar Concerts (Hanalei) Doug and Sandy McMaster have performed traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar and steel guitar since 1999 — one of the longest-running live music traditions on the island. Slack key (kī hōʻalu) is a uniquely Hawaiian guitar style passed down through families, and the McMasters learned from masters and now share the tradition weekly. Fridays at 4 PM and Sundays at 3 PM at the Hanalei Community Center — intimate, unhurried, and deeply respectful of the tradition.
